Mode of action

Like foscarnet, the phosphorylation of cidofovir is not dependent on viral enzymes. The drug acts by inhibiting viral DNA synthesis.

Adverse effects

Cidofovir has significant renal toxicity and it is contraindicated in patients with preexisting renal impairment. Other side effects include uveitis, ocular hypotony, neutropenia and metabolic acidosis.
